AetherSX2: Best Bringing PlayStation 2 to Android

Figure: A PlayStation 2 DualShock controller, representing the PS2 gaming legacy that AetherSX2 aims to bring to mobile devices. AetherSX2 is a new Android-based PlayStation 2 emulator built on the open-source PCSX2 code.

In early 2023 it attracted attention as the “promising Android-based PS2 emulator”, demonstrating surprisingly smooth performance on high-end phones. Its developer (known as Tahlreth) quietly showcased an alpha build running demanding PS2 titles at playable speeds.

Because it’s derived from PCSX2 (LGPL/GPL code), AetherSX2 offers broad game compatibility without the spyware or fees of closed alternatives like DamonPS2. The emulator remains in closed beta testing, but early reports from testers indicate it runs better than expected, likely making it the best option for PS2 gaming on Android.

Licensing & Open-Source Compliance

Licensing & Open-Source Compliance

AetherSX2 is entirely based on PCSX2’s source, so the licensing had to be checked carefully. The PCSX2 core and plugins are LGPLv3, except for three leftover GPL-licensed libraries (a PPSSPP debugger, the FreeType font library, and libmpeg2 for video).

The Aether SX2 developer resolved these by dropping the PSP debugger and FreeType OSD (AetherSX2 uses its own interface) and swapping out libmpeg2 for FFmpeg (LGPL). In other words, all GPL-only code was removed or replaced. As the PCSX2 team noted, once those libraries are gone “the entire project would become purely LGPL licensed”.

  • PCSX2 Core: LGPLv3 (compatible with GPLv3).
  • GPL parts: Originally, three small GPL libraries (PPSSPP debugger, FreeType OSD, libmpeg2).
  • Changes in AetherSX2: PSP debugger and FreeType code were not used, and libmpeg2 has been replaced by FFmpeg (LGPL).
  • Result: The released AetherSX2 app will be fully LGPL/Open-Source. There is no proprietary or secret code, and the source will be available as required by the licenses.

These efforts mean AetherSX2 complies with the same free-licensing philosophy as PCSX2 itself: anyone can inspect, modify or redistribute the code. (If all GPL pieces were removed, as done here, PCSX2’s guidelines say the combined work needs only to follow LGPL requirements)

Performance & Compatibility

Figure: A user playing a puzzle game on a smartphone, illustrating mobile gaming. Aether SX2 runs PS2 games on Android phones, using touch controls or controllers. In practical terms, AetherSX2’s alpha builds have shown impressive compatibility.

On modern devices (Snapdragon 8-series and similar), many PS2 titles boot and run with good speed. The emulator leverages PCSX2’s optimisations (like a Vulkan renderer) recompiled for ARM, so games like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus reportedly run significantly better than in previous Android attempts. One early reviewer noted that AetherSX2 delivered the promised PS2 emulation “with good performance to boot”. Graphics output and audio are reported to be accurate, and the app includes customizable touch controls for playing without a gamepad. Overall, testing confirms it is likely the most advanced mobile PS2 emulator yet.

Current Development Status

Despite the promise, active development has halted. In January 2023, Tahlreth announced on the official site that he was “done” working on AetherSX2. Citing relentless harassment (impersonation, demands, even death threats), he said the hobby was no longer fun and that no further progress would be made. However, he clarified that existing builds will still run: users can download the last beta from the official archive and continue using it indefinitely.

The app remained on Google Play until March 2024. At that point, Google removed AetherSX2 from the store. This was not unexpected, as the project had already been discontinued. Importantly, the developer warned that NetherSX2 — a community-led fork — has taken up AetherSX2’s mantle. As one report noted, the emulation community “has rallied around NetherSX2, a successor to the AetherSX2 project”. In practice, that means development of new features (like multiplayer) will happen in NetherSX2, while AetherSX2 remains stable at its final beta version.

Warnings & Official Advice

Due to high interest, many fake versions and impersonators appeared. The developer strongly cautions users:

  • Never install APKs from unknown sources or random links. Only use the official builds from trusted sources. Unofficial APKs (found on random websites or YouTube links) often contain malware or unrelated apps.
  • Ignore bogus “developers” or social posts. Tahlreth warns there are people falsely claiming to represent AetherSX2 on Discord, Twitter, etc. Do not trust any account or download link that is not explicitly from /u/Tahlreth or the official subreddit.
  • Use official channels only. Subscribe to the /r/AetherSX2 subreddit for real updates. No other social accounts (Discord, etc.) are run by the dev (at the time of writing).
  • Await official releases on Google Play. When or if an update comes, it will be free, ad-free, and distributed through the Play Store. In the developer’s words, AetherSX2 was “always meant to be a fun hobby… not profit-driven”. It will collect no personal data and never require payment.

By following these precautions and sticking to official sources, users can safely enjoy AetherSX2 and PS2 gaming on Android without falling prey to scams
